Clients often come to us at the end of their rope, driven by desperation. When we ask “Why” we often learn that something has happened. A trigger event, that has made them say: “Enough.” Or “This is it.” Or “It’s now or never.” Or “One last time!” That WHY, the event or feeling or circumstance that led up to that declaration and decision to enroll in NewStart is what we want to hear about, and explore with every new client. We thought we’d write about it here because it’s worth sharing this knowledge with everyone! And everyone is driven by a motivation that is deeply personal.
The WHY behind the decision to go for a healthier more active lifestyle is the driver and the motivator for your journey! Your WHY should make your cry!
Let me give you an example.
Here’s how it went for me…I was walking to the copy machine in my office and was wearing a loose top with grey pants. I remember it vividly.
As I clomped my way down the hallway in my tall shoes and spiffy outfit, I felt it. My back jiggled with every step I took.
I hadn’t felt that before..and in that moment I felt Despair.
So, I made my copies and slithered back to my desk. All sorts of unhealthy and not so nice things going thru my head. I remember thinking: “I’m turning 40. I’m tired. I’m toxic. And I surely don’t want to get into a bathing suit!
Is this REALLY happening to ME?
I had to ask myself, “why is this having such an impact on me?” I realized that the jiggle I felt was a physical reminder that the reality of where I was headed from a wellness perspective was NOT in alignment with what was going on in my head. What I thought didn’t match what was in the mirror.
My quest to get healthy wasn’t about a sudden appearance of back fat.
It was driven by my desire to NOT being tired (and cranky) so I could do fun things with my family (and so they would want to be around me!).
It was about NOT being toxic, physically and emotionally, so I could cultivate meaningful relationships and experiences in my life.
It was driven by NOT being less than what I knew I COULD be! And yes, it was a little bit about looking good in my bathing suit. I am a person on planet earth, after all!
SO, What is it for you?
Maybe you stepped on the scale and passed the number you said you’d never pass.
Maybe you were out of breath after walking up a flight or two of stairs.
Maybe you didn’t have the energy to play with your kids in the park and watched them play instead.
It’s so important for you to identify what it is for you.
Three Times Why
Why are you here?
And Why is that important to you?
And Why is that such a big deal right now?
Keep asking WHY? until you get to the very end of the line and then you have your answer! Your WHY. Your REAL MOTIVATION for making the decision to pursue a new wellness goal.
Some people say, “Your WHY should make you CRY.”
Write it down.
Put it somewhere where you can see it, because…THAT WHY … that why is what’s going to pull you thru the challenging times.
Thru the habit breaking and the new habit-forming times.
The celebration times and the recalibration times.
It’s what will keep you going thru every benchmark along the way to your goal.
Your “why” matters! You matter! So please do this work!
